A petition has been launched urging Wellington City Council to restore funding to the Citizens Advice Bureau after major cuts threatened the future of local services.

Citizens Advice Bureau New Zealand says Wellington CAB branches are facing a funding reduction of around 60 percent, with council support reportedly dropping from about $230,000 to $100,000.

The organisation says the cuts could severely impact its ability to provide free advice and support to thousands of Wellington residents seeking help with housing, employment, consumer rights, budgeting, immigration and family issues.

The petition calls on the council to reverse the funding decision and commit to a long-term partnership to protect CAB services in the capital.

Citizens Advice Bureau operates nationwide through a network of volunteers and community branches, helping people understand their rights and access support services. More than 2,500 volunteers work across Aotearoa delivering advice through face-to-face support, phone and online services.

Supporters of the petition argue the service is essential community infrastructure, particularly during a period of rising living costs and increasing demand for social support.

The funding controversy has also triggered criticism of Wellington City Council spending priorities, with opponents questioning cuts to frontline community services while other council spending continues.

Pressure is now mounting on councillors ahead of final budget discussions, with campaigners warning vulnerable residents could be left without access to critical advice and advocacy services.
