Ngātiwai leader pledges strong voice for Te Tiriti, whānau and future generations
Te Tai Tokerau leader Aperahama Edwards has officially announced his intention to seek the Te Pāti Māori candidacy for the Te Tai Tokerau electorate, positioning himself as a strong advocate for kaupapa Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the aspirations of northern iwi and hapū.
Edwards, who is of Ngātiwai descent, is widely known throughout Te Tai Tokerau and nationally for his work across iwi development, kaupapa Māori advocacy, te reo Māori revitalisation, ocean conservation and regional leadership initiatives.
His campaign is expected to focus heavily on strengthening Māori representation, protecting Māori rights and advancing long-term wellbeing outcomes for whānau, hapū and iwi throughout the north.
Supporters describe Edwards as a steady and principled leader with a strong track record of speaking out on issues affecting Māori communities, environmental protection and the future wellbeing of coming generations.
The campaign is being built around themes of kotahitanga, mana motuhake and tino rangatiratanga, with a focus on ensuring Te Tai Tokerau communities have a strong and disciplined voice within national politics.
Edwards says his decision to stand comes from a belief that Te Tai Tokerau needs leadership grounded directly in the people and committed to defending Te Tiriti and kaupapa Māori priorities.
His background includes extensive involvement in iwi and community leadership, strategic governance and environmental kaupapa linked to the protection of the moana and taiao.
The Te Tai Tokerau electorate remains one of the most closely watched Māori electorates in Aotearoa politics and has long held significant symbolic and political importance within Māori political movements.
Edwards’ announcement signals the beginning of what could become a closely contested candidacy race within Te Pāti Māori as the party continues building momentum ahead of the next General Election.
Further campaign details and community engagement events are expected to be announced in coming months.
