Residents in Whangārei Heads and Doubtless Bay are being urged to take part in upcoming public meetings focused on the growing challenges facing Aotearoa’s coastlines.
The free events, titled Coastal Conversations, will bring together experts, councils and local communities to discuss coastal erosion, sea-level rise and how to adapt to a changing environment.
The sessions will be held at McLeod Bay Hall in Whangārei Heads on May 27, followed by Taipa Beach Resort in Doubtless Bay on May 28, running from 5pm to 7:30pm.
Leading coastal scientist Jim Dahm will headline the events, sharing insights from more than three decades of experience in coastal hazard management, restoration and nature-based solutions. His work has focused on helping communities understand risks and develop practical ways to protect and adapt their coastlines.
Attendees will hear how coastlines are evolving, what strategies are available to respond to erosion and rising sea levels, and how councils are planning for future impacts. The events will also highlight local initiatives aimed at restoring coastal environments and strengthening resilience.
Organisers say the forums are designed to encourage open discussion, combining expert knowledge with local experience and mātauranga Māori to better understand the challenges ahead.
There will also be opportunities for community members to connect, ask questions and explore resources available for those concerned about coastal risks.
With climate change continuing to reshape Aotearoa’s coastline, officials say it is vital communities are informed and involved in planning for the future.
The events are free to attend, with registration encouraged for those planning to take part.
