A body believed to be that of missing five-year-old Aboriginal girl Sharon Granites has been found near Alice Springs, bringing a devastating end to an intense multi-day search.

Police confirmed the discovery was made about five kilometres south of the Old Timers town camp, where the child was last seen after going missing late Saturday night.

The young girl’s disappearance sparked a large-scale search operation involving police, emergency services, Aboriginal trackers and community volunteers, covering vast areas of rugged terrain around the town.

Authorities say a 47-year-old man remains the primary suspect and is still at large, with police focusing efforts on locating him as part of an ongoing homicide investigation.

Key items linked to the case were earlier found near the Todd River, including clothing and other material undergoing forensic analysis, which investigators say are critical to establishing what happened.

Police have not yet confirmed the cause of death, with a post-mortem examination expected to determine how and when the child died.

The discovery has sent shockwaves through the Alice Springs community and across Australia, with authorities describing the outcome as the worst possible result after days of hope the child would be found alive.
