An unusually early sighting of a young humpback whale off the East Coast has marked the launch of a major hapū-led ocean science expedition focused on climate impacts and marine restoration.
The calf, estimated to be around seven months old, was spotted during coastal surveys between Whangaōkena and Rāhuimānuka — a rare occurrence at this time of year, as humpback whales typically pass through Aotearoa waters later in winter.
The sighting coincides with the start of the Āvei Moana Voyage, a two-year initiative led by local hapū aimed at restoring marine ecosystems and tracking environmental changes along the eastern seaboard.
Researchers say the presence of the young Paikea is a powerful tohu, reinforcing the importance of protecting vital migration pathways known as the Blue Corridor.
The expedition will focus on gathering critical environmental data, including biodiversity monitoring and advanced environmental DNA sampling to better understand the health of coastal ecosystems.
Scientists and hapū are working together aboard the research vessel SV Resilience, alongside local support vessels, combining mātauranga Māori with modern science to build a clearer picture of ocean conditions.
The work comes amid growing concern over the impact of sediment runoff from the Waiapu River, which is smothering marine habitats and threatening indigenous species such as shellfish and seaweed.
By mapping biological baselines, the team aims to support the recovery of marine life and strengthen climate resilience across the region.
Data collected will also contribute to customary marine title applications for Ngāti Porou hapū, supporting indigenous-led approaches to ocean governance and long-term protection.
Following its initial deployment, the voyage will expand across the Pacific, connecting with other Indigenous communities to share knowledge and support conservation efforts.
Supporters say the kaupapa represents a significant step toward restoring the health of the moana while ensuring local communities remain at the centre of decision-making.
