Cyclone Vaianu is intensifying as it tracks south towards the Bay of Plenty, bringing destructive winds, heavy rain, and dangerous coastal conditions across much of the North Island.
As of late Sunday morning, the centre of the cyclone remained offshore to the east of the Coromandel Peninsula, but its impacts are already being felt widely. Overnight, wind gusts exceeding 130 kilometres per hour were recorded in exposed areas, while parts of Northland saw more than 100 millimetres of rain within 24 hours.
Authorities warn conditions will continue to worsen as the system moves closer, with the Bay of Plenty and Coromandel facing the most severe impacts. Red Strong Wind Warnings are in place for these regions, with gusts of up to 130 kilometres per hour expected to persist through to Sunday evening.
Emergency officials say winds of this strength pose a serious threat to life, with the potential for flying debris, falling trees, and widespread damage to homes, powerlines, and infrastructure. Significant disruption to transport networks and electricity supply is also expected.
Elsewhere across the North Island, a combination of Strong Wind Warnings and Watches remain in force, with strengthening winds forecast for Auckland and other regions as the cyclone shifts southeast.
Heavy rain is also a major concern, with bands of intense rainfall sweeping across the country. The heaviest falls are expected over elevated areas from Coromandel through to the East Coast, where multiple Heavy Rain Warnings and Watches are in place.
The combination of saturated ground, rising rivers, and ongoing rainfall is increasing the risk of flooding and slips in vulnerable areas.
Along the coast, large swells and strong onshore winds are raising the threat of coastal inundation, particularly around high tide. Authorities are urging people to stay well away from shorelines as conditions become increasingly hazardous.
Cyclone Vaianu is expected to cross the North Island later today before moving towards the Chatham Islands early Monday, where further strong wind warnings have already been issued.
Officials are continuing to urge residents to stay informed, take precautions, and prioritise safety as the storm moves through.
