The public is being urged to have their say on the future of the Tarawera Awa catchment, as a major restoration strategy moves into its consultation phase.
The Tarawera Awa Restoration Strategy Group has released a draft strategy document and is now seeking feedback from communities, iwi and stakeholders across the region.
The plan outlines a long-term vision to restore the mauri, health and wellbeing of the Tarawera River system and surrounding areas, including Te Awa o Te Atua near Matatā.
Developed under a co-governance framework established through Treaty settlement legislation, the strategy reflects collaboration between iwi and local authorities to guide the future of the catchment.
It includes a series of strategic objectives aimed at addressing environmental degradation, improving water quality, and strengthening cultural and ecological values tied to the awa.
The consultation period gives the public an opportunity to influence how restoration efforts will be prioritised and delivered, with submissions open for several weeks.
The Tarawera Awa has long been recognised as an important taonga for iwi and the wider community, but has also faced significant environmental challenges over time.
The strategy is expected to play a key role in shaping future decision-making and investment across the catchment, as efforts continue to restore the river’s mauri for future generations.
