Te Pāti Māori’s Annual General Meeting went ahead in Rotorua Sunday following a tense week of legal developments.
The High Court reinstated former MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi as a party member through an interim order, saying there are “serious issues” to be tested in her expulsion. She is allowed to attend and vote at the AGM.
However, co-expelled MP Tākuta Ferris did not receive a similar ruling and remains outside the party.
Political analysts say the AGM could shape the party’s future leadership, constitution and strategy heading into the 2026 election.
Despite the turmoil, Te Pāti Māori remains influential, holding six Māori electorates and significant political leverage.
A senior member told Waatea:
“The movement is bigger than any internal dispute. The kaupapa continues.”
