The construction industry has been hit by the downturn. Following a Cabinet decision late in 2023, Government ministers decided to close the Construction Sector Accord’s Transformation Plan 2022–2025. According to seek.co.nz there were just 59 apprenticeships open across the country. Māori are significantly represented in the construction sector in Aotearoa New Zealand, making up 16.7% of the workforce and 10.95% of business owners, but are overrepresented in labourer roles.
