More than 20,000 secondary and area school teachers will strike nationwide next month.

Teachers are calling for more support for students’ wellbeing and proper recognition of Māori teachers’ cultural leadership.

PPTA President Chris Abercrombie says the lack of support and resources is taking a toll on both students and teachers.

“We talk about this thing called a moral injury, like I know I could help this young person, be better, but I don’t have the resources to do it. I don’t have the time to do it, I don’t have the ability to do it. And so it hurts you knowing that you could help this child and you can’t,” says Abercrombie.

Industrial action is set to begin on October 23, unless a deal is reached.
