It is with deep aroha and reverence that we acknowledge the passing of Grant Hawke, a steadfast advocate, cultural guardian, and bridge-builder for the people of Ōrākei and Ngāti Whātua.
Grant walked firmly in the footsteps of his tūpuna, yet carved his own path with grace, conviction, and humility. As a tireless activist, he stood alongside his brother Joe Hawke in the long struggle for land justice, never wavering in his pursuit of dignity and recognition for Ngāti Whātua o Ōrākei. But Grant was more than a protestor-he was a peacemaker. A man who understood that healing required dialogue, and that true leadership meant listening as much as speaking.
His presence on the marae was both grounding and uplifting. Whether welcoming dignitaries or guiding whānau through times of grief and celebration, Grant embodied manaakitanga. His ability to reconcile differences-between generations, between iwi and Crown, between tradition and change—was a gift that strengthened the fabric of his community.
Grant’s legacy is etched not only in the history books, but in the hearts of those who knew him. He leaves behind a generation of leaders shaped by his example, and a community forever enriched by his wisdom, humour, and unwavering love for his people.
To the whānau of Ōrākei, we offer our deepest condolences. Moe mai rā e te rangatira. Your work is done, your voice echoes still, and your spirit remains woven into the whenua you so fiercely protected.
Haere atu rā, Grant. You go with our love.
