Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei has released a new waiata, Take Whenua, to mark 185 years since rangatira Apihai Te Kawau gifted 3000 acres of land to establish Auckland, and to celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.
The song is a tribute to Ngāti Whātua’s ancestral ties, enduring obligations, and spiritual legacy in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Released today in three versions—two iwi kapa haka renditions and one commercial version—and is available on Spotify.
Auckland Council’s Head of Māori Outcomes, Anahera Higgins, says the waiata is a significant first for the council and reflects the importance of the moment.
Project lead Majic Pāora says Take Whenua is more than a composition—it’s a living narrative.
The release coincides with the 50th anniversary of Māori Language Week and the annual commemoration of Te Kawau’s land gift, known as Tuku Whenua.
