A powerful new documentary series lays bare the reality of weight loss in Aotearoa and abroad.
Pukunati: Lose Weight or Die, a reo-rich series, follows Gisborne teacher Faren Ormond and Rotorua journalist Roihana Nuri, who travel to India for drastic weight-loss surgery after facing medical inequity at home.
Producer Ngahuia Wade says surgery is often dismissed as the “easy way out,” but Pukunati will show audiences just how far from easy the journey really is.
“You think they’d be all happy, Larry and all that, they’re dying. It’s painful. It’s really, really painful. It’s worse than childbirth. So you know, anyone who says you know they’ve taken the easy way out, you know kai tiko you. You don’t even know, man,” says Wade.
The series premieres September 1st on Whakaata Māori, with all episodes available on MĀORI+.
