Today, Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka says that a new committee led by Adrian Rurawhe is working on formally integrating tikanga Māori into Parliament.
Yesterday, Te Pāti Māori MPs Rawiri Waititi, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, and Hana Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke submitted written statements to the Privileges Committee, defending their haka action during the Treaty Principles Bill’s first reading.
Waititi argued the committee’s decision was likely pre-determined and would not consider the cultural significance of the haka.
“I come from the space that ko tō piki amokura nōu, ko tōku piki amokura nōku, and that’s the choice that Rawiri, Debbie and others have made,” says Potaka.
