Labour MP Peeni Henare has paid tribute to his aunty, te Ao Māori advocate Hinewhare Harawira, who passed away this week.

Henare says she was tough and unwavering in her commitment to tikanga, Māoritanga and Mana Motuhake.
“How we got there, we disagreed a few times, but that was the beauty of Aunty. We could disagree on the marae and have a cup of tea later, and she’d be more than constructive in how we might push kaupapa forward. So a big loss and a sudden loss, you know, we lost so many, and losing her is toughness,” says Henare.
Hinewhare laid at Ngā Whare Waatea Marae last night and travels to Te Tii Marae in Waitangi today before returning to her home marae in Whakapara.
Her nehu is expected to be held on Friday.
