Justice Committee Recommends Dropping Treaty Principles Bill
Parliament’s Justice Committee has recommended that the Treaty Principles Bill not proceed.
Despite this, ACT leader and Associate Justice Minister David Seymour, who introduced the bill, vows to continue pushing for change.
The bill’s referral to the committee was part of the National-ACT coalition agreement.
National and New Zealand First plan to vote it down in its second reading, possibly next week.
The bill received around 300,000 submissions, with the majority opposed.
The committee’s report highlighted concerns about the bill’s consistency with the Treaty, its impact on social cohesion, and potential negative effects on the Crown-Māori relationship.
Seymour remains undeterred, advocating for a national conversation on the Treaty principles.
