There is growing optimism that State Highway 1 south of Kaikōura could reopen early next week, with repair crews making significant progress following the severe flooding that cut the region off earlier this week.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi says contractors have been working around the clock to clear debris, repair damaged road surfaces and restore critical sections of the highway. If favourable weather continues, the route is expected to reopen on schedule, providing a major boost for residents, businesses and freight operators affected by the prolonged closure.
The closure followed days of heavy rain that caused widespread flooding, slips and significant damage to State Highway 1 between Waipara and Kaikōura. High river levels, particularly around the Conway River, washed over sections of the highway, leaving extensive scouring and erosion that required major repair work before the road could safely reopen.
Engineering teams have now completed much of the heavy clean-up work, with crews rebuilding damaged road shoulders, repairing pavement and removing slip material from several locations along the route. Safety assessments continue as work progresses.
While the outlook has improved considerably, NZTA says the reopening remains dependent on weather conditions over the coming days. Any further heavy rain could delay the final stages of repair work or require additional inspections before traffic is allowed back onto the highway.
The closure has had a significant impact on communities across the upper South Island, forcing motorists onto lengthy inland detours via State Highways 7, 65, 6 and 63. Freight operators, tourism businesses and local residents have all experienced lengthy delays and increased travel costs as a result of the disruption.
The reopening of SH1 will restore the main transport link between Canterbury and Marlborough, reconnecting communities that have endured one of the most significant weather events to affect the region in recent years.
Until the highway officially reopens, motorists are being urged to continue using the designated detour routes and to check the NZTA Journey Planner before travelling, as conditions can change quickly.
Road users are also reminded to drive cautiously once the highway reopens, with temporary speed restrictions and ongoing repair work likely to remain in place while final restoration work is completed.
