Kaimahi contracted by the Whānau Ora commissioning agency are devastated after being told their jobs have been terminated.

The agency, also known as Te Pou Matakana, responsible for contracting social services across much of the North Island, has been officially notified of its closure.

Whānau Ora Services commissions programmes from several key providers, including Waipareira Trust, Te Kōhao Health, and Taumarunui Kōkiri.

Whānau informed by CEO John Tamihere say many were visibly upset and shaken.

Kaimahi have blamed the new coalition government, which is reportedly considering non-Māori providers for Whānau Ora services.

Whānau Ora Minister Tama Potaka has been asked for comment.

Te Puni Kōkiri CEO Dave Samuels says due process was followed, and new Commissioners will be announced once contract negotiations are complete.
