The director of the upcoming Shrek Kātahi Te Korokē says the film is a major milestone, with even Americans impressed by the project.
Set to premiere at the Māoriland Film Festival in Ōtaki next month, director Tainui Stephens—known for producing The Dead Lands, Whina, and River Queen—says this is the first time DreamWorks has translated a film into an Indigenous language.
Stephens says collaborating with DreamWorks has been an amazing experience, especially as this is their first time working with an Indigenous team at this level.
The movie features a lineup of voices, including actor and musician Maaka Pohatu as Shrek, actor Tuakoi Ohia as Princess Fiona, Taringa podcast host Te Puaheiri Snowden as Donkey, and reo Māori advocate Jeremy Tātere McLeod as Lord Farquaad.
Tickets for the festival and premiere are on sale now at the Māoriland Film Festival website.
