Tīkanga Māori Health Advisor Dame Naida Glavish welcomes Dr Dale Bramley’s appointment as interim Chief Executive of Health New Zealand following Margie Apa’s resignation over the weekend.

Dame Naida worked with Dr Bramley, of Ngāpuhi descent, during his time as CE of the Waitematā District Health Board.

She says Bramley is honest, considerate, and deeply committed to the interests of the community.

“We can look forward to absolute honesty in the direction that we’re heading in. His 100 percent focus will be on the patient and their whānau, and his interest is also focused on looking after the staff who looks after the family and the patient,” says Glavish.

Margie Apa stepped down from the role with four months left on her contract, following scathing remarks from Health Commissioner Lester Levy.

Levy was quoted as saying he wanted a chief executive who could “build and lead a team that has got serious implementation capacity—someone that can actually do it, instead of writing about it.”

Bramley is expected to be confirmed as the permanent CE of Health New Zealand in the coming months.
