The future of Kaitaia Airport has been secured through an agreement between the Government, iwi, and the Far North District Council.

Ngāi Takoto and Ngāti Kahu hapū will take ownership of the airport land, held in a joint trust, as part of Ngāi Takoto’s Treaty settlement.

A long-term lease with the council will ensure continued operations, and the Government is providing $5.4 million for urgent maintenance and upgrades.

Māori Crown Relations Minister Tama Potaka says the airport is vital for the region, supporting air ambulance services, and civil defence, and providing an alternative to State Highway 10.

Potaka says he is grateful to iwi and hapū for their commitment to resolving ownership issues, ensuring the airport remains a key asset for the community.

Last year, the airport was in danger of being closed due to the dispute.
