Jackson Owens new single pays tribute to oldies
Musician Jackson Owens says his upcoming EP is a true representation of the classic music he grew up listening to.
The Tūrangi-raised, Ngāti Tūwharetoa, Ngāti Awa, Te Arawa, and Ngāi Tahu descendant will release the EP’s lead single, “Something Good,” on streaming platforms tomorrow.
Owens says his grandparents’ taste in soul music, with artists like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, has had a significant influence on the music he creates.
He says the EP is an independent project after being signed to a Sony Music Entertainment-associated label when he was younger, where he and his brother Chauncey have full control over writing and singing about whatever they want.
“Having that say in everything now is a lot more true to who I am. So I’m just having way more confidence in what I’m doing now. So I don’t have to listen to anyone or go this direction. I’m just doing whatever I feel and I feel like the music is connecting more with me. So yeah,” says Owens.
The EP will be released in the coming months.
