Justice advocate Sir Kim Workman, the founding chair of the ‘Understanding Policing Delivery’ project, says the research, conducted with full police cooperation, has the potential to guide how the Police will implement the new Gangs Act.
Yesterday, the groundbreaking study on police practices and community engagement through fairness and equity had its final report released.
Workman says enforcing the gang patch bans, which he assumes not many officers agree with, will be an opportunity for the Police force to put the report’s findings into practice.
“All the police can do really, they can’t change the legislation, but they can make it more equitable and fair, and I’d like to think that that will be the pattern that we’ll see over the next few years,” says Workman.
The Act comes into force today.
