Human Rights Commission condemns Treaty Principles Bill
The Human Rights Commission says the Treaty Principles Bill is unnecessary, unworkable, and breaches human rights and Tiriti obligations.
On Thursday, the bill will have its first reading in Parliament, with all coalition parties agreeing to pass it on to the select committee.
The Commission’s Rongomau Taketake Indigenous Rights Governance Partner, Dayle Takitimu, says the Waitangi Tribunal’s Ngā Mātāpono report highlights the racial discord the bill has caused and questions its value.
She says the bill represents the Crown determining and defining how the Treaty partnership will be actualised, without consulting Māori.
“That’s very evident now. There’s a hikoi commenced this morning from the far north, where 1000s of our people are putting that into very visible practice. People feel very strongly about it because they’ve been traded off, essentially, and been excluded from a process,” says Takitimu.
The Toitu Te Tiriti convoy will be en route to Whangārei, expecting to arrive there by 6 p.m. at Terenga Parāroa Marae.
