A reo Māori songwriter says te reo Māori music is the norm and will shape our future reanga.

On Tuesday night, the APRA Silver Scroll Awards were held in Wellington at the St James Theatre, with Ngāpuhi and Te Arawa kaiwaiata Anna Coddington winning the Silver Scroll for her bilingual waiata Kātuarehe.

Co-writer and renowned opera singer Kawiti Waetford says the success of the waiata is a reflection of the diverse styles and high-quality music artists like Stan Walker and TAWAZ bring to the public.

“When I look and hear these waiata, it just fills me with so much pride and also hope for the future. Hearing our reo in such amazing ways on the airwaves, on the media and from the mouths of people who are just, you know, humming it down the street as they walk, too,” says Waetford.

Waetford also co-wrote the Silver Scroll Maioha Award-winning waiata, He Rei Niho performed by Jordyn With a Why.
