Call to lower Māori bowel screen age
Health Minister Shane Reti says he could be open to lowering the bowel cancer screening age for Māori.
Hei Āhuru Mōwai – the Māori Cancer Leadership Group – wants the age for screening Māori lowered by 10 years because of the increased risk within that population.
Dr Reti says the Government is looking at lowering the screening age overall.
“Clearly there are some increased risks for Māori as there are across some of the other screening programmes like cervical cancer so all of that will be taken into account including the pilots that are being run in the Waikato as we move towards how we can further improve the bowel cancer screening age,” he says.
