Musician Stan Walker says translating one of his songs into te reo Maori has allowed him to see it in a new light.
Ki Taku Awa dropped today for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.
It’s a translation of Back to the River, which came out of a songwriting camp he convened a year ago with some of Aotearoa’s top writers and musicians.
He says it forms a trilogy with the singles I Am and Māori ki te Ao, which were written in the same five-day session.
“Back to the River, Ki Taku Awa is the prequel of I Am and Māori ki te Ao. It’s the song that talks about the healing and going back home and going back to your awa, being cleansed, going back to your kainga and going back to that place of healing,” Walker says.
He says he now realises the song is about his relationship with his late father.
