The head of a ministerial advisory group looking at improving outcomes for Maori learners says many of the solutions are already known.
Wayne Ngata says that gone are the days of blaming the kids.
If the system doesn’t suit the child, it’s the system that needs to change.
“Maori have worked it out – ka nui mihi nga kura kaupapa, ki nga kohanga, ki nga whanau o te kaupapa. We need to understand Maori need to take responsibility and be allowed to take responsibility for education of our own and be supported in doing that,” Dr Ngata says.
He says Maori don’t need to be told what’s best for them, which has happened too often in the past.
