A Pacific academy of sciences and humanities will be launched at the Commonwealth Heads of Government October Meeting in Samoa in October.
The secretariat will be based at the National University in Apia, but the academy will support academics from across the Pacific.
Auckland University professor Sir Collin Tukuitonga says it’s a way to encourage the science and research needed to tackle problems in the region like climate change and obesity.
“It’s really important because it encourages, supports science, it creates pathways for young people to consider the sciences, it seeks resources and I’m pleased our (New Zealand) government has signalled their intention to support us,” he says.
The Royal Society Te Apārangi, the Australian Academy of Science and the International Sciences Council are also involved.
