The Government is putting a further $500,000 into the Wairoa Mayoral Relief Fund in the wake of last week’s flooding, on top of its initial $100,000 contribution.
Emergency Management and Recovery Minister Mark Mitchell visited the district yesterday and thanked marae, iwi, hapū as well as volunteers, civil defence, council and emergency services for their response to last week’s floods which affected more than 500 homes.
He says the putea is to provide support for the community’s immediate and pressing needs, such as section clean ups, replacing clothes and bedding, and the hire and purchase of drying and dehumidifying equipment.
The council estimate cleanup and recovery costs will top $40 million.
