Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka says he’s impressed with the approach Māori communities are taking to housing development.
Today the minister is accompanying Ngāti Haua tumuaki Hone Tamihana and Kīngi Tuheitia Potatau Te Wherowhero VII to the opening of Ngāti Haua’s first housing development at Tauwhare east of Hamilton and the huri whenua ceremony for ts second development at Waharoa near Matamata,
He says housing deprivation has been a significant issue for Māori communities, and the approach now is to invest in iwi-led housing and property development initiatives.
“I’ve been to a number of these developments, places like Tairawhiti with Toitu Tairawhiti-Willy Te Aho and in Ngāti Korikī Kahukura down towards Pōhara Marae, up north, Taranaki, all over the place, Māori are taking the time to not only build houses but help build communities,” Mr Potaka says.
