Auckland councillor Alf Filipaina sees the retention of port ownership as a major win in the fight over the council’s long-term plan.
Mayor Wayne Brown’s initial plan to sell the operating lease for Ports of Auckland to overseas interests was rejected by a majority of councillors, and instead the business will be overseen under a tripartite arrangement between the company, the council and the maritime unions.
The port is expected to bring in just over a billion dollars over the 10 years covered by the budget.
“We’ve kept it for Tamaki and the jobs we have there with the majority of our Maori and Pasifika people that come in from across Tamaki Makaurau, kept their jobs safe as well,” Mr Filipaina says.
Mr Filipaina says it’s unfortunate the progressive councillors were unable to find a similar solution that could have prevented the sale of the council’s remaining Auckland International Airport shares.
Alf Filapaina says paid tribute to the CEO of the Ports of Auckland and Maritime Union for the support given.
