The Government has resurrected the Three Strikes sentencing law.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee say a bill will have its first reading in the House later this week before being referred to the Justice Committee.
A similar “Three Strikes” law was brought in under the previous National-ACT Government, but was scrapped in 2022.
Ms McKee says the law will help keep New Zealanders safer.
Offenders will be warned of the consequences of re-offending at their first strike and will be denied parole at their second strike. For a third strike, offenders will have to serve the maximum penalty without parole.
