Associate Police Minister Casey Costello says she wants to see more wraparound support alongside new high profile patrols.
The Government has announced an additional 21 police officers will be redeployed in Auckland City next week, bringing the total number of beat police in the CBD to 51 by the end of July.
Ms Costello, a former police sergeant, says communities feel safer if they see more police walking around.
She says beat patrols are also able to identify young people most at risk of getting into trouble.
“This isn’t just about police attending and walking away. This is about identifyng at-risk families and the other social agencies and how we can support and create those early intrventions so I think it’s important to look at the and and proces of police initially attending and identifying the risk and then getting the other services engaged and around the table to do more,” Ms Costello says.
