Taranaki Regional Council is today starting two weeks of consultation on setting new rules for using fresh water.
Spokesperson Sam Tamarapa says it’s seeking feedback on eight areas including E. coli, sediment, nutrients, animal effluent, earthworks and land disturbances, wastewater and stormwater discharge, how farm practices can help water quality, and how much water can be sustainably taken from waterways..
Taranaki, with its mix of intensive dairying and dry stock, foresty and energy has some unique characteristics.
“Whilst we have a lot of water here in Taranaki, a lot is actually taken out of the smaller streams and rivers we have and the impacts are a lot more significant in terms of what is happening in that particular waterway. The larger rivers are not that much impacted but the smaller ones are,” Mr Tamarapa says.
The Regional Council has organised 16 drop-in sessions starting at Okato and Opunake today and finishing in New Plymouth on July 1.
