Māori techno-cyber rapper Diaz Grimm says he’s trying to reach a wide audience with his latest album.
Māui & the Sin plays on the legend of Maui, setting it in a future world where te ao Māori is almost forgotten and technology is controlled by people who only have profit on their mind.
He says sin is the problems we don’t fix now.
“I’m not necessarily making this album for Māori. I’m trying to bring the Te Ao Māori world to non-Māori, and to people who aren’t familiar with the Māori world. But the ambition is just to put it out there in the world and let it do its thing – and then continue on with the next project,” Grimm says.
He’s working with an American graphic artist to create younger and older avatars of himself – so the project contains audio-visual wizardry alongside the music.
