Matariki tuia ngā whetū, tuia ngā tāngata
Matariki weaver of the stars, weaver of the people.
That’s the theme chosen by Auckland Council and this year’s mana whenua host Ngāti Tamaoho for the super city’s Matariki Festival.
Council spokesperson Melanie Huata-Lucas says it starts on July 15 with a dawn service at Pukekohekohe maunga which she urges everyone to get along to the service they can.
It will be followed by more karakai, kai and kapa haka at Nga Hau e Wha o Pukekohe Marae.
Most of 90 festival events over the following two weeks are free, including music and cultural events with top Auckland musicians and artists.
