A Canadian native preschool educationalist says the pride Māori have in their language is something they want to take back home with their language.
A delegation of Canadian First Nations people visited at Ngā Whare Waatea Marae this morning as part of a two week trip to education and media institutions with a focus on language revitalisation, reconciliation, and Māori rights.
Jackie Jack, from western Vancouver Island, says seeing a kōhanga reo brought home how the intergenerational transfer of language can be life changing.
“How Māori people uplift their children and youth and adults and encourage one another and support one another is so uplifting nobody is scared to speak their language,” Ms Jack says.
