Waipareira aims big in Middlemore move
Waipareira Trust chief executive John Tamihere says a giant whānau ora health centre and affordable housing development – within walking distance of Middlemore Hospital – will benefit thousands of South Auckland whānau.
The project is a joint venture between the West Auckland urban Maori trust and Ngai Tai ki Tāmaki with backing from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development.
The centre will dwarf Waipareira’s Henderson Whanau Centre.
“Our Whanau Ora Centre here (West Auckland) serves around 30 thousand people per annum. Over there (Otahuhu) we’ll be building a Whanau Ora Centre that has four times that capacity and capability,” Mr Tamihere says.
The health centre is due to open in 2027, but more than a hundred units for the elderly are expected to open in 2025.
