Green MP Huhana Lyndon says a move to exclude general Treaty of Waitangi clauses from legislation is an assault on Māori.
She says the Fast-Track Approvals Bill introduced last week talks about protections for iwi who have existing treaty settlements, but ignores treaty rights that are above and beyond settlements.
She says the lack of language won’t stop Maori fighting for their rights.
“Removing these clauses does not mean that we are not going to go to court. I think that as te iwi Maori, if we see a wrongdoing, we need to kokiri that kaupapa – whether it’s to the Waitangi Tribunal, as we see over and over right now, or in other settings, whether it’s environmental or te kooti teitei,” Ms Lyndon says.
