A te reo advocate says Māori won’t allow the gains of the past 50 years to be destroyed by bigotry and racism.
Dr Hana O’Regan, the chief executive of education services company Tātai Aho Rau-Core Education, says the coalition Government is buying a huge fight with both Māori and large sections of the non-Māori population who want the Treaty to be honoured.
It’s also picking a fight with the Kohanga Reo generations.
“Look at our children, our babies, who are the ones of that kohanga reo generation – and who have had opportunities in te reo…honestly people don’t know what they’re dealing with. These guys are grounded, they’re strong in their culture, and we’re not going to let it happen,” Dr O’Regan says.
She’s pleased that minstream media has mostly not bought into the Government’s anti-Māori rhetoric.
