A Te Arawa land trust says it wants to do something about Rotorua’s housing crisis.

Ōwhata 2B and 7 Ahuwhenua Trust will start construction of 93 units near Rotorua Airport early in the new year.

Chair Jason Rogers says it aims to offer below-market rents to qualifying whanau on some units and competitive prices for buyers.

The development features a park surrounded by 20 two-bedroom kaumātua units, and the other 2 to 4-bedroom units spread out behind.

“We’ve designed it on that basis, and I think that’s why a lot of our whānau embraced this concept – it’s because we have catered for single units right through to the 4-bed intergenerational units, so it’s going to be a great mixed community,” Mr Rogers says.

Ōwhata Marae is less than eight minutes walk away, and a shopping centre is also nearby.
