Stanely Pao brings independent voice to Mangere race

Anti-poverty advocate Brooke Stanley Pao says standing as an independent for parliament is giving her a powerful platform to share her vision of societal and constitutional change.
She’s standing in Mangere, which has always been a Labour stronghold.
She says her mahi with Auckland Action Against Poverty has drawn people to her campaign, with community members supporting her with time and money.
Ms Stanley Pao says the major parties aren’t addressing the systemic and structural issues underlying poverty.
“They’re not really talking about lifting benefit levels. They’re not talking about making public services more accessible by making them free. There’s not real plan that’s been put forward for a just transition. As an independent candidate I really want to elevate the conversation to look at systems change – what are the models that can be put forward for a just transition which I believe is actually a universal services model,” she says.
Ms Stanley Pao says she’s also promoting the model contained in the Matiki Mai Independent Working Group on Constitutional Transformation.
