Atereano Mateariki Māori invited to Native American basketball tourney

Under-19 boys and girls teams will head for Phoenix, Arizona and represent New Zealand Māori Basketball Aotearoa in July’s Native American Basketball Invitational.

Girls’ team manager Marsella Hippolite says it’s an opportunity to showcase Māori basketball talent and create whanau connections.

“So it is showcasing out talent on the basketball court but it is also sharing as bit of te ao Maori and our tikanga and what’s similar and what’s different and just another place for out kids to make that connection and have some whanau overseas so it they ever go back, this is something they can build on as well,” she says.

Marsella Hippolite says the annual Poitūkohu Māori National Tournament in Rotorua was modelled on the Native American event.
