Teachers play strong hand with short strike

Veteran unionist Matt McCarten says yesterday’s teacher strike put pressure on the government without losing public support for the cause.
Primary, secondary and kindergarten teachers joined strike after months of negotiations for better pay and resourcing stalled.
Mr McCarten says they needed a show of force, as well as drawing attention to their cause.
“So this is really, you know, not a long drawn out strike or anything like that. It’s actually a day of having action – if they can get 30,000 on the streets, that would show the level of commitment from the teachers, and work on their public support. And then, it might change the negotiation stance at the table,” he says.
Matt McCarten says the rare show of teacher solidarity should force the ministry to rethink its position.
