Worker input key to making logging safer

A Māori trust set up to promote safety in the forestry sector says it’s time for real changes in the most dangerous industry in Aotearoa.
Candice Gates from Tāngata Humāria Charitable Trust says the injury rate is double that of other sectors and the fatality rate is 15 times the overall fatality rate for all sectors….with about 50 deaths in the last decade.
She says safety standards can be boosted immediately through worker participation.
“We need a trained health and safety rep, per crew, that can stop work immediately when things are dangerous. They need to have that mana restored back within their roles,” Ms Gates says.
She says workers also need seats at at the decision-making table – rather than just being the subject of enquiries about injuries and deaths.
