Greens unforgiving on Oranga Tamariki monitor
Green MP Elizabeth Kerekere says the party would back the repeal of the Oversight of Oranga Tamariki System Bill if there is a change of government next year.
The bill passed this week creates a legally independent monitor of the child protection agency, gives responsibility for dealing with complaints to the Ombudsman and leaves an expanded Children and Young Persons Commission with the advocacy role.
Opposition parties and the Greens want monitoring and advocacy to remain with the Children’s Commissioner, and for the Government to wait for the report of the Royal Commission on Abuse in State Care.
