Maverick Molloy well-behaved for mayoral talk fest

The chair of last night’s Auckland mayoralty debate at Nga Whare Waatea Marae says it’s looking like the race will come down to two candidates.
The debate brought together Viv Beck, Fa’anānā Efeso Collins, Craig Lord and Leo Molloy, with Wayne Brown unable to make the live event but interviewed separately.
Political commentator Shane Te Pou says Mr Collins, the current Manukau ward councillor, probably confirmed his front position in what will be a tight race.
“Efeso would be, if I was a betting man which I am, I would give him odds to win simply because he has got that left spot. The rest have to divide right up. I am not writing off Leo Molloy. I know he can be a maverick. I know he can say some silly stuff from time to time but last night we saw a reasonably well-disciplined, well-defined Leo Molloy,” he says.
Mr Te Pou says all the candidates seemed progressive on Māori issues apart from Craig Lord, who was the only one to oppose co-governance structures.
