A Māori supermarket owner is warning there’s more to the business than stacking shelves.
The Commerce Commission is set to release its final report today on competition – or the lack of it – in the sector.
Based on its interim report, there’s keen anticipation it will suggest ways to open up the existing duopoly.
Iwi and Māori business interests have expressed interest in participating if what happens.
Former All Black Eric Rush, who owns the Regent New World supermarket in Whangārei, says he’d be stoked to see iwi involved in a third player.
“But that comes with a proviso – it’s not an easy game to be involved in and whether it be Māori or anyone else who does get involved unless you are a company that has worked in that space, it’s not as easy as you think,” he says.
Eric Rush says like other food retailers he operates with a 3 per cent margin.
