Labour says hoki atu to Green Party’s Hoki Whenua Mai
The chair of the Green Party’s Te Mātāwaka caucus isn’t deterred by the Government’s rejection of its Hoki Whenua Mai policy.
The policy includes allowing the Waitangi Tribunal to consider claims to private land and creating a fund to assist whānau and hapū to buy raupatu land when it comes up for sale.
Elizabeth Kerekere says it reflects what she hears from Māori around the motu.
“We will keep pushing for this because we travelled to many land occupations across the country last year, we saw whānau and hapū doing fundraising pages to buy back their own whenua, and that’s really, really wrong,” Dr Kerekere sats.
